Oregon woman to face Measure 11 penalties if convicted for murder

As most Oregonians know, felonies have significantly tougher consequences than other criminal charges, typically longer prison sentences and heftier fines. A southern Oregon woman is now looking at such charges - in her case, murder charges - after her recent arrest for violating terms of her probation from an unrelated assault case.

According to the Oregon State Police, the 38-year-old woman was indicted by a Josephine County grand jury. She was also indicted for felony firearms possession and evidence tampering. Evidence apparently linked her to the disappearance and probable death of a man from a remote campsite near Sunny Valley, a dozen miles north of Grants Pass.

A combined task force investigation into the man's disappearance started in early April. OSP detectives and the Josephine County Sheriff's office coordinated their efforts and located the suspect in Eugene, where was arrested on a probation violation. The same day, the remains of a man believed to be in his mid-30s were found at the isolated campsite. The state medical examiner has yet to release the identity of the body.

In Oregon, murder is regarded as a Measure 11 crime and mandates a minimum prison sentence of 300 months or 25 years without any early release; voters approved tougher sentences when they approved Measure 11 in 1994. For this and other reasons, anyone facing such charges should immediately contact an experienced legal professional.

Whenever an Oregon resident faces Measure 11 felony charges, proper legal representation can mean the difference between conviction and a mandated sentence, reduced charges or dismissed charges. An experienced criminal defense professional can help a defendant request a plea deal or pursue dismissal of charges. In all cases, a professional can present a compelling defense on behalf of the accused.
