Police arrest a number of people every year in and around Portland in connection with crimes. A considerable number of these arrests are for alleged robberies and other violent crimes. An arrest for a robbery in Oregon can have serious consequences.
Five police officers and the City of Forest Grove have been named as defendants in a civil lawsuit stemming from a traffic stop last summer in Forest Grove, about 25 miles west of Portland. According to the two women who filed the complaint, officers traumatized them and violated their rights during the June 2010 traffic stop.
Last June, concerns over drug crime activity spurred Portland police to launch a one-year plan to increase police patrols in Northwest Portland's Old Town Chinatown neighborhood. As part of that effort, a deputy district attorney was assigned to focus on keeping those convicted of Portland drug crimes out of the neighborhood and two other areas designated as "Drug Impact Areas."
